How updates work

Shopify does not auto-update a theme you uploaded from a zip. That cuts both ways:

  • nothing changes on your live store behind your back
  • updating is a manual job

Releases are published on GitHub. Watch the repository if you want to hear about them.

Updating without losing your work

Because the theme is a zip rather than a connected app, an update is a new theme, not a patch:

  1. Download the new zip.
  2. Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip file. It lands in your library, unpublished.
  3. Open it in the editor and set it up — logo, colours, menus, sections.
  4. Preview it thoroughly.
  5. Publish when you are happy.

Your old theme stays in the library, so rolling back is one click.

Settings do not carry across automatically between two uploads of a theme. If you have made a lot of changes, config/settings_data.json from the old theme can be copied into the new one through the code editor — but read the changelog first, because a setting that has been renamed will not apply and one that has been removed will be ignored.

If you edited the code

Changes you made to base.css or theme.js are yours and will not survive an update, because the new zip ships its own. Keep a diff. This is the usual reason to prefer a settings change over a stylesheet change where both would work.

Versioning

Ordinary semantic versioning. The patch number is a fix, the minor number adds something, and a major number means the theme was rebuilt and settings will not carry across — which is what happened between Fashe 1.x and 2.0.

Support

  • Bugs and feature requests: open an issue on GitHub. That is where the source, the changelog and the release history live, and where things actually get fixed. Issues are public, so an answer helps the next person too.

Electro is a free theme. There is no private support desk behind it, and no paid tier that gets faster answers.

Privacy

The theme makes no third-party requests. No analytics, no CDN, no font host outside Shopify, no phone-home. Whatever your store loads is whatever you and your apps have added.
